Glossary:Book

From PrintRoom archive

Papers bound in such a way that an apparent spine is formed, often featuring a cover of a heavier paperweight than the interior leaves and potentially also endpapers. Industrial printing methods are typically employed, particularly in the instance of books that are reprinted as several editions, whereby each editions numbers into the hundreds. Hand-bound books are more typically bespoke or printed in comparatively smaller editions. Whether bespoke or mass-produced, an ISBN registration may be present. In the context of contemporary artistic praxis, a book may constitute an artwork in itself or be otherwise supplementary to an artistic endeavour, as in the case of an exhibition catalogue. Printing methods may include perfect, coil, sewn, leporello. Additional features, intended to support the publication's preservation or compliment its aesthetic or conceptual qualities, may be present; such features can include a display case, sleeve, or bookmark.
