A physical publication that, either in its mode of production or thematic matter, alludes to the traditions of indie-publishing subculture. Such publications are usually made in a highly economic fashion, employing commonly accessible reprographic equipment, such as office and domestic photocopiers (sometimes referred to by the popular brand name ''Xerox'') and scanners. As such, these publications are often produced in comparatively smaller editions, are not republished, feature standardised format sizes (eg. A5, A4), and simple binding technique (saddle-stitch or staple). Despite their relatively cheap and rapid production, zines can be considered collector's items, especially so when thematically orientated around a particular fandom or cultural interest, thereby gathering a cult following. Their economic feasibility has also led to the zine medium being widely adopted for the purpose of community organising, consciousness-raising and other activist practices. Within the artistic context in particular, [[Glossary:Risograph|Risograph]] reproduction has gained popularity in recent decades.

Multiple pages situated on a single surface, commonly a minimum of two pages per spread. Depending on the binding method, the pages may be intended to be viewed alongside one another (such as in the case of a center spread – the uppermost layer of a signature, which thereby creates the effect of being at the center when the signature is folded), or alternatively viewed alongside a different page printed on a separate surface. The sequence and alignment of the pages is typically created through collating spreads.

Risograph is a stencil duplication printing method often used for its economical printing setup costs, vibrant spot colours and relative ease of use.

A Risograph machine shares a similar outward appearance as as photocopier, though functions in a way that is more comparable to a mechanized screen-printing device. Similar to screen-printing, ink is pushed through a stencil (known as a ''master)''. Each color layer is printed separately by means of an ink-containing drum. Unlike digital printers, which typically print combinations of colors simultaneously, Risograph machines use spot colors (ie. solid, block colors). Ink used in Risographs is soy-based and non-toxic, though tends to have a somewhat prolonged drying time, compared to newsprint.

A frame, either physical or digitally rendered, that contains information. Such frames are usually sequenced, enabling the information to be consumed by the user in a manner that facilitates the envisioned user-experience of the pages' creator (e.g. a coherent literary narrative). The sequence may be indicated by numbers detectable the within the frame's limits. In certain instances, a page's information may only be determinable by experiencing the wider sequence – for example, in the case of visually blank pages, which often function as a form of punctuation. In order to avoid confusion, such pages sometimes verbally acknowledge their lack of independent information with a statement to the effect of ''This page left intentionally blank''.

Collated spreads, usually measuring a minimum of 21x26cm when folded in half, commonly but not exclusively stapled or unbound. The overall aesthetic of these publications evoke associations with widely-circulated, periodical papers – for example, comprised of paper that is uncoated, off-white, comprised of wood-pulp fibers and within the weight range of 40-90gsm, generally referred to as 'newsprint'.
